This full-day Rio tour combines two of our top-selling Rio de Janeiro tours into one epic adventure! Experience both our Santa Teresa Discovery and Corcovado, Christ Statue and Copacabana Tour in this jam-packed day that shows you all the sites you’ll want to see.
Blessed with the most stunning natural setting, Rio de Janeiro is a city that is as famous for its beauty as it is for its beach culture. Stretching up into the mountains that hug glistening Guanabara Bay is the city’s vast Tijuca National Park, which hosts the famous Corcovado Mountain.
From beautiful vistas and iconic locations, to some of the areas that have helped make this city the melting pot that it is, you’re sure to find Rio a captivating and complex place that can steal your heart forever.
On this full day Rio city tour we’ll explore the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue, see what local life is really like in Copacabana, travel around the city like a local, experience the Bohemian vibe in the Santa Teresa neighbourhood and drink in some pretty epic views of the city.
First up – downtown! While this is mostly a Rio walking tour, we’ll start with a little public transit, shall we? Take the subway downtown so you can experience how locals get around Rio and help orientate yourself in the city.
We’ll hop off at Carioca Station and wander through the Financial District, home of huge companies such as Petrobras and BNDES. Check out Carioca Square, once the main source of drinking water in Rio, transported in by the Aqueducts of Lapa.
From here, we’ll climb aboard the tram for the journey up to Santa Teresa, which involves a stunning 20 minute ride over the aqueducts. This is the last tram line in Brazil that is used solely for transportation purposes.
Hopping off at Largo dos Guimaraes, it’s time to explore the cobblestone streets of Santa Teresa! We’ll wander about on foot and discover beautiful architecture, art galleries, restaurants and the local costumes that characterise Santa Teresa.
One of Rio’s oldest neighbourhoods, Santa Teresa, situated high on a hill overlooking Rio, enchants locals and visitors alike with its cobbled streets and eclectic architectural styles. The views of the city centre and the bay aren’t too shabby either. (Okay, they’re stunning, but that’s hardly a surprise…we’re in Rio, after all!).
Previously a neighbourhood dominated by the elite, with their departure to more modern suburbs of Rio, Santa Teresa has been transformed into an artistic centre with many artists choosing the area as their preferred place of residence. Among the attractions in Santa Teresa is the Ruins Park and its gorgeous view over downtown Rio de Janeiro and Guanabara Bay. Many visitors compare Santa Teresa to the bohemian district of Montmartre in Paris, and we’d say that’s a pretty fair comparison.
During the Carnival, many street bands perform open air concerts on the streets, the most famous one is “Bloco das Carmelitas”, which was named after the local convent, which we’ll see on our way back towards the Lapa District. As our time in Santa Teresa winds down, we have one final (and rather important) stop to make: Selaron’s Staircase. This masterpiece and picturesque icon is one of the late artist’s most famous pieces and is without a doubt one of the highlights of this Rio tour.
Our Rio tour will continue with an incredible bird’s eye view of the city from the base of the Statue of Christ. This enormous white statue keeps constant watch over Rio, offering sweeping 360 degree views of the city’s natural wonders: beaches, lagoons, forests, bays, and mountains that seem to rise from the ocean.
It’s no wonder that the ‘Cristo’ statue (as it’s known by locals) was selected as one of the new seven wonders of the world. Soak up the views, pick out some of Rio’s most famous sights and snap a must-have picture before getting a very different view of the city.
Next, it’s time to trade in this tourist icon for something less visited, the back streets of the Copacabana and Leme neighborhoods. Accompanied by your local Urban Adventures guide, you’ll wander through the area tasting local snacks, sipping refreshing beer and learning all about its lifestyle and beach culture.
We’ll fill you in on all the important info you’ll need for your stay in town as we discover some hotspots in both Copacabana and Leme. We’ll show you a perspective that most visitors to Rio don’t get and you’ll learn how to enjoy the beach at its best.
Please note: The order of the attractions visited and the transportation taken might change to better suit the logistics of the day

It was awesome – excellent tour guide (Juliana), very knowledgeable and charistmatic, we saw so many great sites in one day! I was totally impressed. Also thought it was a great idea that the guide took pictures of the group to put in a Google album (I always forget to take pictures of myself) – unexpected benefit and great idea!
Mr. Daniel W. from United Arab Emirates travelled on 11 Sep 2017:
We had a great time with Alex, seeing the some of the sights of beautiful and energetic Rio. The walk through the Favela was a definite highlight as well as very photogenic Santa Teresa.
Mr. David F. from USA travelled on 13 Aug 2017:
This is what I wrote on TripAdvisor. Truly outstanding!
I have been lucky enough to travel quite a bit, but Juliana is simply the best guide I’ve had. I am a history teacher with substantial knowledge of Brazil, and I must say that Juliana is not only tremendously knowledgeable about Rio’s history, but also is a keen cultural observer that generously shares her insights. Ask her about politics, society, race, religion, urban renewal, the Olympics, anything, and Juliana will answer all your questions with depth. Further, her humanity and genuine concern (we spoke at length about the ethics of “favela touring” as we visited Santa Marta) as refreshing. She introduced us to Marcelo, a fantastic local guide at the favela, who like Juliana, was open about all sort of questions about Rio and the social divides that are often impossible to ignore. I could not recommend Juliana highly enough. Throughout the tour, Juliana also gave us advice about the best angles for pictures; heck, she took and shared over 200 pictures she herself took of me and my daughter as we toured the city. She also shared helpful YouTube video clips of areas of Rio we visited together. Therefore, not only did we get a fantastic tour, but we came away with a tremendous record of our adventure. Thank you, Juliana, até a próxima, que Deus esteja com você!
Mr. Brian S. from Canada travelled on 26 Jun 2017:
Juliana was good, I really liked her.
Ms. Alison R. from New Zealand travelled on 24 Dec 2016:
Excellent way to get a feel for the city. Well paced, informative and good value for money. Glad that sugarloaf will be included going forward, but I was happy without it wandering around less touristy areas. Lots of fun. Alison

The tour was beyond my expectations! Daniel was an excellent guide… it was like touring with a good friend! He was very insightful and provided a good background from a local perspective. Truly enjoyed myself!!
Mr. Susan G. from Canada travelled on 25 Sep 2016:

Mr. Charles V. from USA travelled on 08 Aug 2016:
Daniel was a superb guide. Very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. I thoroughly enjoyed the full day tour of Rio. Very well done! This was my first time using Urban Adventures, but after this experience in Rio, it will definitely not be the last!
Mr. Harrison Y. from USA travelled on 19 Jul 2016:
The tour guide should get a raise… he was awesome. The morning part of the tour was just him and I, and after I told him that I had a hangover from the previous night’s adventure, he suggested a few quick stops along the way to make me feel better. He introduced me to Rio hangover cures, helped me practice my Portuguese and Spanish, and made sure we hit all the highlights of the tour. He was incredibly professional and was extremely knowledgeable of all the local art and history. When he didn’t know something, we stopped and talked to local store owners and people who were his friends to get answers. I could not have asked for a better tour… To use a Spinal Tap phrase to describe your tour guide… This one goes to 11.
Mr. Adam E. from USA travelled on 15 Jun 2016:
EXCELLENT TOUR! Daniel our guide was great! He was very knowledgeable as a guide, but more importantly interacted with us as a friend during the tour. I would recommend him as a guide for anyone traveling to Rio. Also, his assistant who was in training was great too – I can’t remember her name, but she took the tour with us to learn about how to be a new guide. She was great too!
Ms. Narelle Z. from Australia travelled on 31 May 2016:
Daniel was an excellent tour guide. His local knowledge and his enthusiasm for this one day tour was exceptional. The favela tour was a highlight!
Mrs. Florence S. from United Kingdom travelled on 30 Apr 2016:
A really good introduction to Rio, travelling with a local guide on foot and on public transport – quite a long day but full of interest. Excellent guide.
Mr. JOHN W. from Australia travelled on 25 Mar 2016:
This tour allowed the visitor to experience the history and lifestyle in Rio from a much more in depth and less touristy approach than most tours. The favella visit was fascinating. Some of the other passengers didn’t realize it was a walking tour but I don’t think you can get a true feel for the city from a tourist bus seat and so getting out and mixing with the locals was great. The food at the lunch stop was of good quality but the restaurant a bit more expensive than other similar restaurants I ate at in Rio.
Ms. Mandy M. from Australia travelled on 02 Dec 2015:
Daniel was an amazing guide – he was full of enthusiasm and energy, and great at explaining the history and culture of the places we visited. The favela tour was definitely the highlight – what a unique opportunity to experience something uniquely Rio. I was skeptical that the favela part would be a bit voyeuristic but it was not at all. It was really educational, and a great opportunity to provide income to a few people living in the area. I would highly recommend the full day to in order to see the best parts of Rio!!!!
Ms. Stefania L. from Italy travelled on 30 Jan 2015:
This tour is a great way to experience the variety of sights and neighbourhoods Rio has to offer. Daniel, our guide, was extremely friendly and fun to be with, attentive and interesting to listen to. His English is really excellent, and he brought many aspects of the city, including the favelas, close by giving us lots of unbiased information without ever getting tired of answering our questions. Good job!
Mrs. hilary g. from United Kingdom travelled on 27 Jan 2015:
We had a brilliant time, although we were very tired both mentally and physically as the day covered so much. Ivan was very enthusiastic and knowledgable, spoke excellent English and was good fun.
Ms. Julia K. from United Kingdom travelled on 21 Nov 2014:
For me it was the first time in Rio de Janeiro and the full day tour gave me a great overview of the city, while also showing me some hidden gems. Daniel, our guide, was very passionate and enthusiastic and it was a joy to spend the day with him! He was very helpful and shared a lot of insights about the city as well as answered all of our questions. All in all a great day of exploring a great city and would definitely recommend it to anybody visiting Rio de Janeiro!

Ms. Tara P. from USA travelled on 25 Mar 2013:
Luiz was a fantastic tourguide and showed me all the interesting bits of Rio. I was lucky enough to have him to myself for the entire tour, and so we had a great time together. It was a very informative experience, he was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly and I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a local guide that feels more like a friend than anything. We also had the best feijoada for lunch! My experience on this occasion was so positive, that I am now about to book an UrbanAdvetures tour in Foz Do Iguacu!
Mr. Randall G. from USA travelled on 31 Dec 2012:
Luiz is an outstanding tour guide.
